How to Clean Dog Pee From a Bed

Spread the love

A dog’s bed is where they spend a good portion of time, so it’s no surprise that accident may occur from time to time. Urine can leave behind a nasty smell, and dog urine has an especially pungent and unpleasant odor. There could be many reasons why your furry friend has uses your bed as their toilet.

However, when you’re faced with a stain, you don’t want to consider the reasons, you want to fix the mess. Afterward, you may want to look at just why your dog is acting the way it is.

Act Fast

But, first things first! You’ll want to clean up the urine as soon as you’ve noticed it. However, make sure that your dog isn’t in the room when you clean it. This could give the impression that urinating results in attention; you do not want your dog to start peeing on everything just to get a little extra attention.

If you want to get rid of the smell completely, acting fast is vital. You should be thorough as well; you don’t want even a faint scent to linger. Dogs have a sense of smell a lot stronger than humans’, and they tend to urinate in the same place often.

Don’t Reach for Those Chemical Cleaners

Your first instinct might be to grab the nearest cleaning product, but this could be a mistake, especially if you value your pet’s safety. Not all chemical cleaning products are pet-safe and could harm them. Also, because of the strong smell of these products, dogs can confuse it with the smell of urine. This might lead to them repeating their stinky misdeed.

Approach Differently

Getting urine out of a mattress is not the same as getting other stains out of it. You should keep in mind how urine reacts to chemicals. Using regular detergent is not recommended; this will result in a sticky residue. Over time, this residue will attract dust and dirt.

Simple Steps On Cleaning Dog Pee Off a Bed

Dry

You should be able to locate all the spots of urine, even if it’s not as obvious at first. Simply follow your nose. Pat all the areas dry with sponges or paper towels. Toilet paper isn’t a good idea — it might tear. Don’t rub the stain dry; this will just spread the urine around. Use as much as possible pressure when dabbing dry.

Clean

Now that you’ve dried out as much of the stain as you can (and then some), you should clean the area. Although there are many products available that you can buy to use on these stains, there are home remedies too. A really popular and effective method is using baking soda and vinegar.

For this, you will make a mixture of vinegar and baking soda that you will use to clean the urine spot. This combination is ideal because dog pee contains acidic and alkaline substances, and the vinegar-baking soda mixture is naturally acidic.

To make the mixture, dissolve some baking soda in vinegar. The amount you use will be determined by how big the dog urine stain is. This combination will help to control the smell and get rid of it better than most chemical cleaning products.

Once the baking soda is dissolved, put the mixture in a spray bottle for easier application. You will spray it directly onto the stain. After spraying it on, resist the temptation to rub it in. You should just let it dry now. You may need to repeat this process of spraying and drying until the stain, and the smell is gone.

Alternatives

If you’re not satisfied with the baking soda and vinegar mixture or do not have any, there is another option or two you can try. You can also try this in addition to the before-mentioned mixture if you wish.

Lemon Juice and Water

You can use this simple mixture to take on pee stains. It has long been one of the most popular home remedies used by pet owners. Because lemon juice is so acidic, it helps remove the odor and replaces it with a lemony smell. A bonus of lemon water is that dogs tend to really hate the smell of citrus fruit.

It can be a good repellent for a dog that is making it a habit to pee on your bed. To apply, squeeze lemon juice onto the stain or mix it with water. You can spray it on in the same way as the vinegar and baking soda mixture. Alternatively, you can wet the stain and rub a lemon onto it.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Soap

Another option is a mixture of regular old soap and hydrogen peroxide. Mix a teaspoon of soap with a cup of hydrogen peroxide. Stir it until everything is mixed thoroughly.

Apply the mixture to the stain with a damp cloth and let it dry. Be sure to cover all of the affected areas. As with the other methods, you may have to repeat the process a few times.

Aftercare

Keep the area where your dog has urinated clean and train them to not repeat the mistake. It should be noted that discipline methods that involve violence are frowned upon and aren’t recommended.

There are many ways to teach your pooch how to behave that do not call for any physical discipline action. You can also consider repellents that will steer your dog away from areas it should not be urinating on.

You could also consider draping a cover over the bed in question. Most dogs do not like the feel of it, so it serves as a way of deterring them from peeing on the bed. If that isn’t effective, at least you’re saving your mattress from the urine.

Conclusion

There are a few ways that you can get rid of dog pee on your bed. You should avoid using chemicals and use natural ingredients instead. These are better because they leave a nicer smell behind. As long as you act quickly, you could save your bed and won’t have to throw it out because it smells terrible.
